What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychological therapy and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a first-line treatment for a wide range of mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress.

At its core, CBT helps identify the underlying patterns that may be keeping you stuck. This can include processes such as excessive worry, overthinking, self-criticism, avoidance, low motivation, panic responses, or habits that may provide short-term relief while unintentionally maintaining distress over time.

Once these patterns are understood, therapy focuses on developing practical skills and evidence-based strategies that help create meaningful and lasting change. The overall goal is not simply to help you feel better now, but to help you understand why difficulties develop, build long-term resilience, and develop the confidence to manage future challenges independently.

“Andy was just brilliant with me, it was clearly something I needed in my life and since his therapy my outlook on life has completely changed. I feel like a better person now and only have him to thank”

“Andy was fantastic across the full length of the therapy. He was a calming and consistent presence who explained things clearly with a straight-forward sense of care, while also allowing ample time for feedback, questions, and open-ended discussions. The overall service was incredibly appreciated and extremely beneficial to me across a range of challenges. It’s helped me to manage my difficulties as well as understand why they’re happening.”

My Therapeutic Style

I believe effective therapy should always be tailored to the individual. While evidence-based treatment protocols and structured approaches are important, no two people experience psychological difficulties in exactly the same way. My approach therefore focuses on understanding your individual experiences and developing a flexible treatment plan built around your specific needs, goals, and circumstances.

Therapy should always be collaborative. Together, we work to understand the underlying patterns that may be maintaining difficulties such as anxiety, low mood, trauma responses, overthinking, avoidance, self-criticism, or emotional distress, while focusing on the areas of change that matter most to you.

A central part of my approach is helping you develop practical skills and deeper psychological understanding so that you feel confident managing future difficulties independently. My aim is not to provide long-term open-ended therapy, but to equip you with evidence-based tools that create lasting change well beyond the therapy process itself.

I place a strong emphasis on providing the highest standard of care and continuously improving the support I offer. I regularly complete advanced professional training, attend ongoing clinical supervision with senior therapists, and continue developing specialist knowledge across a wide range of mental health difficulties to ensure the therapy I provide remains current, effective, and grounded in the latest research.

I also understand that the relationship between therapist and client plays an important role in successful therapy. I routinely gather anonymous client feedback and consistently receive positive comments regarding my warm, collaborative, and approachable style, with recent client satisfaction ratings averaging 9.5/10.

My priority is to provide therapy that is personalised, scientifically grounded, and focused on helping you create meaningful and lasting psychological change.
